For the most part, publishers provide distribution. They get your book into bookstores, and that's about it. They just don't have the money to do a lot of promotion because most books lose money or barely break-even. One out of 10 books will actually make a publisher money. So for the most part, authors are forced to promote their books much more intensively than they ever have before, especially given the fact that more and more books are being published each and every day.
